Alternate ways of understanding the Atonement

There’s a thread on the Ooze asking for ways of understanding the atonement without involving Penal Substitution. I wrote a lengthy enough reply to qualify as a blog post so I have copied it here.

Here are a few ways besides Penal Substitution that you can look at the cross (I think it should be pointed out here that these perspectives are meant to highlight the power of the cross, not subtract from it). These are all very brief explanations.

Proof Positive

The words of Desmond Tutu (Nobel Laureate, Anglican archbishop of South Africa, and chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation commission) in his book No Future Without Forgiveness (pg 86):

For us who are Christians, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is proof positive that love is stronger than hate, that life is stringer than death, that laughter and joy and compassion and gentleness and truth, all these are so much stronger than their ghastly counterparts.
